We’re aiming to inspire engineers of the future at a special event on Thursday November 22.

We’ll be among the businesses exhibiting at the Careers in Engineering event at Curtiss-Wright on the Aviation Park West at Bournemouth International Airport.

It is being held for students in Years 9 to 13, and their parents, to give an insight into the future opportunities on offer.

There will be the chance to meet and speak with existing apprentices, as well as local employers such as ourselves.

The Grange Sixth Form is leading the initiative with support from Curtiss-Wright and Christchurch and East Dorset Councils.

The event is being held from 6pm to 8.30pm and anyone interested is asked to contact the school via its website here.

As a major local employer with a workforce of more than 140 people, we have been recruiting talented young people locally and from further afield for many years.

We regularly attend university and school events to tell young people about the benefits of a career in engineering.

Earlier this year we attended the Careers […]

Stage set for Dorset Business Awards

Good luck to all the finalists at the Dorset Business Awards on Thursday night.

John Reid & Son Ltd (REIDsteel) is platinum sponsor of the 2018 awards, which are being held at the Bournemouth International Centre.

The awards – organised by Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry – are among the most prestigious on the south coast.

Our Managing Director Simon Boyd said: “As a four-times winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and a previous DBA winner, we know just how valuable recognition of this kind is.

“As well as raising a winner’s profile, success gives employees a great sense of pride and drives the business on to greater heights.

“Good luck to all of the finalists on the night.”

Simon and REIDsteel Operations Manager Donna Campo attended the DBA launch at the historic St Giles House in Wimborne St Giles earlier this year.

We stepped up our support for the annual honours as a platinum sponsor after our successful sponsorship of the Exporter of the Year category in 2017, which was won by Aeronautical & General Instruments Limited (AGI) of Poole.

A multi-million dollar civic centre constructed from prefabricated steel sections manufactured 5,000 miles away at REIDsteel is set to open in the heart of Belize City.

REIDsteel has performed the structural design, detailing and fabrication, including the cladding and glazing for the landmark project in the Central American country.

The Belize Civic Center, costing $32.9m Belize Dollars (£12.7m), is due to be officially opened early this year.

It includes an air-conditioned arena with a seating capacity of 4,500 for sports and entertainment. The complex includes international standard basketball and volleyball courts, practice courts, offices, media boxes, changing rooms, parking and a deck area for boats to dock.

REIDsteel project engineer Pepe Oliva said: “There has been tremendous interest in Belize about the new national civic centre.

REIDsteel rebuilds hurricane-hit Caribbean

2017-12-01T10:01:36+00:00December 1st, 2017|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , , , |

We’re aiming to play a major role in the reconstruction of hurricane hit communities in the Caribbean with our disaster-resistant buildings.

We have designed, manufactured and supplied hundreds of buildings in the Caribbean and Central America over the past century, including churches, granaries, schools, industrial units, aircraft hangars and bridges.

Our Sales Manager Mike Chappell has recently returned from a fact-finding trip to the British Virgin Islands and Antigua where he saw the devastation first hand. Mike met business and community leaders as well as government ministers.

His visit came after virtually all of REIDsteel’s structures – including warehouses, supermarkets and banks – survived hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which hit at speeds of more than 200 mph. Only one of our many buildings had suffered minor structural damage as a consequence of the hurricanes.

We’ve has been called in because of our expertise and strong relationships built with communities and businesses over many years.

One of the first projects will be to rebuild a school funded by a wealthy local benefactor in Tortola, which is the largest […]

Flying high at MRO Europe

2017-09-25T14:54:48+01:00September 25th, 2017|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , , , , |

We’re exhibiting at one of the aviation industry’s premier trade shows in early October, MRO Europe .

The event is being held at the ExCel centre in London for the aerospace maintenance industry.

We have nearly a century of experience designing and building  aircraft hangars and their doors – right back to our first constructions for the famous pilot Louis Bleriot in the 1920s.

French aviator Bleriot was the first person to fly across the Channel and pioneered early aircraft construction.

Today we retain our position at the forefront of the airfield industry with hangars of all sizes for aircraft ranging from the Airbus A380 to private jets.

Our project engineer Toby Hill-Cousins said: “Although we design and build many different types of steel structures these days, aviation is in our DNA since our very first hangars for Louis Bleriot.

“We have led the way with new technologies and practices, including our own patented methods, as the aviation industry has evolved over the years.

“Aircraft are getting larger and have increasingly complex maintenance needs, while many hangars these days incorporate doors, cranes, offices and […]

BREXIT: REIDsteel Managing Director Simon Boyd appeared on Any Questions. He is pictured back left with Jonathan Dimbleby centre and Conservative party chairman Sir Patrick Sir Patrick McLoughlin back right. Front left is Labour MP Caroline Flint and front right is Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable

OUR Managing Director Simon Boyd urged politicians to present a united front for Brexit negotiations when he appeared on the BBC’s flagship Any Questions programme.

He warned that some politicians were damaging the position of the UK’s negotiators by playing party politics and that some (past and present) were deliberately trying to undermine the process with the aim of keeping us in the EU.

Mr Boyd, who is managing director of Christchurch-based REIDsteel, appeared on the Radio 4 programme in Dorchester with Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable, Labour MP Caroline Flint and Conservative Party chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin.

He sparked a lively debate when he insisted that Brexit could not come quickly enough and that the UK must be prepared to walk away without a deal.

Simon, speaking after the broadcast, said: […]
