We’re aiming to inspire engineers of the future at a special event on Thursday November 22.

We’ll be among the businesses exhibiting at the Careers in Engineering event at Curtiss-Wright on the Aviation Park West at Bournemouth International Airport.

It is being held for students in Years 9 to 13, and their parents, to give an insight into the future opportunities on offer.

There will be the chance to meet and speak with existing apprentices, as well as local employers such as ourselves.

The Grange Sixth Form is leading the initiative with support from Curtiss-Wright and Christchurch and East Dorset Councils.

The event is being held from 6pm to 8.30pm and anyone interested is asked to contact the school via its website here.

As a major local employer with a workforce of more than 140 people, we have been recruiting talented young people locally and from further afield for many years.

We regularly attend university and school events to tell young people about the benefits of a career in engineering.

Earlier this year we attended the Careers […]

More than 200 people attended our public exhibition in Christchurch about our exciting new development plans.

We held the consultation event in the community room at Christchurch fire station to unveil our proposals to residents, businesses and local groups.

Our plan is to move to a new state-of-the-art facility after outgrowing our existing home of more than 50 years in Reid Street, Christchurch.

We’re proposing that up to 220 new homes be built on the site in Reid Street after we leave for the new headquarters elsewhere within the borough.

Visitors to the public exhibition had the chance to find out more, give their views and fill out feedback forms.

They included Christchurch MP Sir Christopher Chope and Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Ian Girling, who are pictured above with our managing director Simon Boyd (far left) and our planning consultant Ken Parke (far right).

REIDsteel managing director Simon Boyd said: “It was a very busy event with lots of feedback from those who attended.

“The plans were well received by the majority of […]

A flagship hospitality centre with steelwork designed, manufactured and supplied by REIDsteel has officially opened at the iconic Thruxton Motorsports Circuit.

The £1.5m hospitality centre at Andover in Hampshire includes a restaurant, bar, exhibition gallery, function rooms, hospitality suites, catering facilities, viewing terraces and a balcony.

Its innovative design also includes a grand atrium and entrance lobby to reflect the dynamism of motorsport and Thruxton’s rich heritage.

We designed, manufactured and supplied all of the steelwork, cladding and glazing for the modern, two-storey building alongside local contractor Mata Construction.

It is one of many cutting-edge arenas and stadiums we have designed and manufactured both at home and abroad, including football grounds and sports centres.

John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) has continued its support for Twynham School and The Grange School through its renewed sponsorship of the Young Chamber programme.

Both of the Christchurch schools were among the first members to join the Dorset Chamber initiative and have now been able to sign up for a second year.

Managing Director Simon Boyd said: “It is no secret that the engineering sector is currently facing a skills shortage.

“As a growing business with UK and worldwide projects to deliver, it is imperative that we engage with the next generation of potential engineers, draughtspeople and skilled steel and sheet metal workers, as well as those who will be involved with the managerial and administrative aspects of our organisation.

“Young Chamber is one of the programmes we are working with to address this, now.

“Both The Grange and Twynham schools have a great ethos and we are delighted to be supporting them through the Young Chamber for a second year.”

2018-01-25T15:09:12+00:00January 25th, 2018|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

A multi-million dollar civic centre constructed from prefabricated steel sections manufactured 5,000 miles away at REIDsteel is set to open in the heart of Belize City.

REIDsteel has performed the structural design, detailing and fabrication, including the cladding and glazing for the landmark project in the Central American country.

The Belize Civic Center, costing $32.9m Belize Dollars (£12.7m), is due to be officially opened early this year.

It includes an air-conditioned arena with a seating capacity of 4,500 for sports and entertainment. The complex includes international standard basketball and volleyball courts, practice courts, offices, media boxes, changing rooms, parking and a deck area for boats to dock.

REIDsteel project engineer Pepe Oliva said: “There has been tremendous interest in Belize about the new national civic centre.

“It is possibly the largest public construction project in the country’s history. Although we have designed, made and supplied many buildings in this part of the world, it is still incredibly rewarding to deliver a project of this magnitude on time and on budget to the client’s satisfaction.”

More hard work needed after Budget

2018-01-11T12:19:55+00:00November 22nd, 2017|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , , |

Business rates, VAT thresholds and investment in 5G mobile networks, full fibre broadband and artificial intelligence were among the  measures in today’s Budget.

It also included a pledge of £3bn to prepare for Brexit and growth figures for economic growth and productivity downgraded.

Our managing director Simon Boyd said: “It was disappointing but not surprising to see productivity growth and business investment figures revised down.

“Measures in the Budget to encourage investment, training and new technology may go some way to address this, yet the only real solution remains with a clean Brexit from the EU and the freedom that offers our businesses free from the constraints of EU regulations and directives.

“The Chancellor promised to set aside £3bn to prepare for our departure although he must ensure that there is enough for a ‘no deal’ scenario in our future trading arrangements.

“He declared it a Budget to make Britain fit for the future but more hard work needs to be done over the coming months to make sure we are ready for Brexit, and on our own terms if need be.”

Chancellor urged to be positive in Budget

2017-11-17T18:17:20+00:00November 17th, 2017|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Our managing director Simon Boyd has urged Chancellor Philip Hammond to take a positive approach to businesses and Brexit in his Budget next week.

The Chancellor will reveal his plans for the year ahead next Wednesday, November 22, before the House of Commons.

Simon said: “The Chancellor is drinking in the last chance saloon. This is the final full Budget before Brexit and comes as negotiations with the EU reach crunch point.

‘Spreadsheet Phil’ must get his numbers right to ensure that we have an economy fit for Brexit whatever the outcome, and that includes setting aside more funding for a ‘no deal’ scenario.

“It means greater support for businesses, including measures to boost investment and productivity, so they are ready to fully grasp the great opportunities on offer once we are out of the EU.

“One of the simplest yet most effective things the Chancellor could do at the despatch box is strike a positive tone to reflect our optimism in a post-Brexit Britain and show negotiators in Brussels that we are embracing the future with confidence with […]

Engineering the future

We met potential engineers of future when we attended the University of Southampton’s careers fair.

Our Director Tim Reid and Senior Structural Engineer John Harrison manned a stand and talked to students about graduate opportunities with REIDsteel.

We were among 105 exhibitors at the All Sectors Fair at the university, which has a highly regarded engineering faculty with a reputation for producing excellent graduates.

John (pictured) said: “We were very impressed by the students, who were bright and enthusiastic.

“Their quality shone through and there was a huge demand for summer internships.

“We were inspired by the event and we are attending more career fairs to explain the opportunities for career progression at REIDsteel.

“As well as attracting some of the brightest graduates, the fairs also help us raise our profile within the engineering community too.”

Our stand included a rolling video, displays and information about REIDsteel. It was our first careers fair. We’re now due to attend a second event at the University of Portsmouth.

Half of our engineering recruits are graduates. Employing them at an early stage of their career means we can train them to the […]
