On top of the world with award

2022-10-07T09:30:32+01:00October 6th, 2022|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , |

A ‘super-hangar’ built by REIDsteel (John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd) at London Biggin Hill Airport has won a prestigious national award for design excellence.

The cutting-edge development – the largest and most advanced dual cantilever hangar in the UK today – claimed top honours in the 2022 Structural Steel Design Awards (SSDA).

Dorset-based REIDsteel provided the design, drawing, fabrication and installation of the complete steel frame, electrically operated hangar doors and underslung cranes as well as the floor decking, cladding and glazing elements.

It worked with main contractor, Tonbridge-based Civils Contracting Ltd, on the maintenance hangar for occupation by global aerospace giant Bombardier.

A delegation from REIDsteel – selected from all areas of the business – attended the awards ceremony in Spitalfields in London.

Simon Boyd, managing director of REIDsteel, said: “All at REIDsteel are absolutely thrilled to win this prestigious award.

“The SSDAs are a hallmark of excellence as the foremast awards in our industry and act as a real showcase for the exceptional capabilities of British design, engineering, manufacturing and construction.

“Our success is down to the whole team at REIDsteel and […]

AND THE WINNER IS………..REIDSTEEL!!!

2022-09-30T16:05:27+01:00September 30th, 2022|Categories: News|Tags: , , |

John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd has scooped top honours as a winner in the prestigious Structural Steel Design Awards for a super-hangar at London Biggin Hill Airport.

The celebrations began after the Award was announced at a glittering ceremony in London with members of our team in attendance.

An Award is the top honour, followed by a Commendation and then a Merit so we are ecstatic that the hangar claimed this prize in a field boasting some exceptional British structural engineering projects.

Our delegation on the night included a cross-section of employees representing the entire company from the workshops, offices, design office, and other departments, including John Harrison and Richard Hanson.

It was a true ‘one team’ effort by ourselves, main contractor Civils Contracting Limited, Biggin Hill Airport and BOMBARDIER.

The twin-cantilever maintenance hangar is the largest of its kind in the UK and impressed judges with its innovative design, value engineering, environmental credentials and elegant façade.

Well done to everyone involved. This […]

Final countdown to Structural Steel Design Awards

2022-09-29T09:57:50+01:00September 29th, 2022|Categories: News|

THE waiting is nearly over for the 54th Structural Steel Design Awards (SSDA) with the winners to be announced on Thursday September 29.

We’re on the shortlist with Civils Contracting Limited and London Biggin Hill Airport for a twin-cantilever ‘super-hangar’ for aerospace giant BOMBARDIER.

We provided the design, drawing, fabrication and installation of the complete steel frame, electrically operated hangar doors and underslung cranes as well as the floor decking, cladding and glazing elements. Our entry was one of just two shortlisted projects where the design and fabrication were from the same company.

The advanced maintenance, repair and overhaul hangar has two 160m clear span entrances for servicing aircraft, along with offices and a VIP lounge.

Its design allowed the roof of the hangar area to safely span without support from internal columns to achieve the client’s aspiration for two vast, unobstructed hangar floor spaces of 77,500 sq ft (7,200 sq m) each.

The hangar at Biggin Hill rubs shoulders with 21 other blue chip projects on the shortlist, including The Tower of Light in ManchesterBritannia Leisure Centre in […]

Energy price cap – John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd comment

2022-09-21T13:25:20+01:00September 21st, 2022|Categories: News|Tags: , , |

Simon Boyd, managing director of John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd, said: “The price cap is to be broadly welcomed as it is significantly less than the rate we have been quoted by industry suppliers although it is still an increase of 100% on our current cost.

“On the face of it, it is more bearable although it is incredibly important that the supply chain passes all of the savings on. If so, I am confident that the price cap will prevent an immediate increase over the next six months after which time it is inevitable that more support will be needed unless conditions in the energy market change.”

Simon added: “Certainty is absolutely vital in business and we will be lobbying at the highest level to ensure companies in the most energy intensive sectors which are so important to the national economy and UK plc, such as steel and manufacturing, receive the support necessary beyond the six-months limit of the cap in order to survive, invest and grow.”

  • The price cap in wholesale prices is £211 per MWh of electricity, and £75 per MWh for gas for six […]

Energy support package – reaction comment

2022-09-08T18:09:40+01:00September 8th, 2022|Categories: News|Tags: , , , |

Simon Boyd, Managing Director of John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd, comments upon energy support measures announced today:

“Our new Prime Minister’s intervention to freeze energy costs is clearly welcome although it would have been preferable to see the timescale expanded beyond six months for businesses.

“Capping energy costs at the same price per unit that households pay will help and it will be useful to see more details about this in order to gain greater clarity for budgeting over the coming months.

“It is encouraging to see further support promised for vulnerable sectors beyond the initial six months’ package based on a review this autumn, during which time I will forcefully be pressing the case for manufacturing and the steel industry.

“Overall, the new Prime Minister has recognised the necessity of tackling the underlying causes of the energy cost crisis which is critical for the long security of our energy supply and economic resilience to ensure our country is self-sufficient and not at the mercy of international markets or events.”

“She has my full support and I feel certain that she is going make some radical changes which will benefit British businesses and their people.

“Clearly there is absolutely no time to waste in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing businesses, not least the soaring cost of energy where the government will need to intervene without delay.

“Decisive support is urgently needed from our Prime Minister and her new government for businesses, especially small and medium sized firms which are the backbone of country’s economy and are among those most seriously affected by unsustainable rises in energy costs.

“I have been lobbying at the highest level for SMEs and UK manufacturing, particularly for the steel industry, and in my role as a member of the CBI’s manufacturing council and through the Dorset Chamber.

Green light for safer future with steel

GREEN LIGHT.: Artist's impression of new manufacturing base and offices at REIDsteel in Christchurch, which has been given planning permission by BCP Council

Steel Times International recently published an article about REIDsteel leading the way in the structural steel sector in a special edition about decarbonisation. Many thanks to the magazine for focusing on our initiatives. Here is the full article…

THE structural steel sector could prove to be an important cog in the wheel of change as momentum builds towards a cleaner, greener decarbonised industry.

Deadlines are coming ever closer – including the government’s 2050 net zero target for all sectors of the economy and the 2035 aspiration for near-zero emissions from ore-based steelmaking recommended by the national Climate Change Committee.

Structural steel firms such as John Reid & Sons (Strucsteel) Ltd are in a percipient position, able to gauge sentiment amongst clients and main contractors on one hand as well as suppliers on the other; especially when it comes to cost and sustainability.

The Dorset-based company – known as REIDsteel – has recognised the growing influence of sustainability on its own and clients’ decisions for some time, […]
