The core structural steelwork for Bombardier Aviation’s new 250,000 sq. ft hangar at London Biggin Hill Airport is complete, with construction of the cantilever roof beginning in earnest.

Dorset-based structural steel firm John Reid &Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) and design and build specialist Civils Contracting Ltd (Civils) are building the Bombardier service centre together, with products sourced from British Steel.

On completion, it will be the largest cantilever roofed hangar to be built in the UK for more than 50 years.

The complex cantilever design allows the roofs to safely span the hangar without support from any internal columns, creating a vast floor space capable of housing up to 14 Global 7500s jets at any one time.

John Harrison, senior technical manager at REIDsteel, said: “REIDsteel has strong history at London Biggin Hill, with more than half of the hangars currently standing built by the company.

“This is the most technically challenging yet. With a 165m long central core supporting two 45m cantilever roofs, it is the UK’s second largest after a 46.5m cantilever hangar built at RAF Brize Norton in […]

John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) used cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) technology to help win a major new contract with Southeast Asia’s largest airline.

We are designing and manufacturing the 175,000 square feet (16,335 sq m) hangar for Lion Air at Batam Airport, a short ferry ride from Singapore.

Our team used VR headsets to impress senior airline executives with a virtual 3D tour of the proposed development as part of their presentation to win the multi-million pound project.

Now we are setting our sights on delivering the first steelwork later this year and will supervise construction of the hangar – for maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft.

Bid Manager, Benjamin Riviere said: “This is our first development for Lion Air and our first at Batam Airport.

“The VR presentation was key because we were able to transform their brief into a virtual world with the hangar taking shape before their eyes on VR headsets.

“We were able to give them an exciting opportunity to see how the hangar would realistically look and work at a very early stage.

“Our ability to create these cutting-edge VR presentations for an immersive […]

Christchurch

A disused site on Stony Lane in Christchurch is set to have fresh life breathed into it with a new commercial property development with support from John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel).

Penton Motor Group is building four units on the former Boyland Joinery site to create a trading hub for businesses. The hub is to be known as Penton Business Park.

Over the past eight years Penton Motor Group has built four new showrooms for its franchised motor business and renovated a further three separate investment buildings.

This is a new direction for the long established Wilson family business, which has locations in Christchurch, Poole, Andover and Salisbury, to develop a ground-up commercial investment property other than for its own use.

Fellow Christchurch firm John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) has designed and manufactured the steel frames, decking, cladding, glazing and doors for the project.

An estimated, circa 30 new jobs could be created in a boost for the local economy providing a total of 1,885 sq metres / 20,300 sq ft for trade counter, light industrial, storage and […]

Structural steel company John Reid & Sons Ltd (REIDsteel) has welcomed workers back to its manufacturing facility in Christchurch.

After an extensive review of its steel handling and manufacturing procedures, it has resumed production with strict operating protocols and safety measures in place.

With the re-start of factory operations after a five-week suspension, the company is in the vanguard of businesses nationwide throwing open their gates to support employees and the UK economy.

Managing director Simon Boyd said: “The health, safety and wellbeing of our people, suppliers and contractors remains our first priority.

“We took the immediate decision to send all employees home on March 24 when the lockdown was first announced to stop any potential spread of the virus and allow us to assess ways to resume operations.

“Since then we have been working on plans to re-open the factory/works and our construction sites to allow those who cannot work from home back to work while still respecting the hygiene and social distancing guidelines.

“Following careful consideration […]
