Engineering the future

2017-10-25T16:42:04+00:00 October 25th, 2017|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , , |

We met potential engineers of future when we attended the University of Southampton’s careers fair.

Our Director Tim Reid and Senior Structural Engineer John Harrison manned a stand and talked to students about graduate opportunities with REIDsteel.

We were among 105 exhibitors at the All Sectors Fair at the university, which has a highly regarded engineering faculty with a reputation for producing excellent graduates.

John (pictured) said: “We were very impressed by the students, who were bright and enthusiastic.

“Their quality shone through and there was a huge demand for summer internships.

“We were inspired by the event and we are attending more career fairs to explain the opportunities for career progression at REIDsteel.

“As well as attracting some of the brightest graduates, the fairs also help us raise our profile within the engineering community too.”

Our stand included a rolling video, displays and information about REIDsteel. It was our first careers fair. We’re now due to attend a second event at the University of Portsmouth.

Half of our engineering recruits are graduates. Employing them at an early stage of their career means we can train them to the […]

And the award nominees are…

2017-10-17T13:40:26+00:00 October 17th, 2017|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , , |

Congratulations to all of the finalists in this year’s Dorset Business Awards – especially the three nominees for the UK Exporter of the Year title.

Poole-based firms Actisense – Active Research Limited and Aeronautical & General Instruments Limited are on the shortlist along with Trimetals Ltd of Blandford.

As headline sponsor of this newly created category for 2017, it was tough to pick the trio and all are richly deserving of their success in making the shortlist.

Our Managing Director Simon Boyd, who visited the nominees to assist in judging, said: “Well done to everyone at Actisense, Aeronautical & General Instruments and Trimetals on reaching the shortlist.

“It is recognition of the tremendous work their people are doing every day to help their firms grow through overseas trade.

“Exports are incredibly important to the UK economy. The UK’s huge trading deficits can only be addressed through the ingenuity, drive and determination of exporters who can turn this trading deficit into a surplus.

“We wish the UK Exporter of Year finalists, and all of the other categories, the best of luck and look […]

Flying high at MRO Europe

2017-09-25T14:54:48+00:00 September 25th, 2017|Categories: News|Tags: , , , , , , , |

We’re exhibiting at one of the aviation industry’s premier trade shows in early October, MRO Europe .

The event is being held at the ExCel centre in London for the aerospace maintenance industry.

We have nearly a century of experience designing and building  aircraft hangars and their doors – right back to our first constructions for the famous pilot Louis Bleriot in the 1920s.

French aviator Bleriot was the first person to fly across the Channel and pioneered early aircraft construction.

Today we retain our position at the forefront of the airfield industry with hangars of all sizes for aircraft ranging from the Airbus A380 to private jets.

Our project engineer Toby Hill-Cousins said: “Although we design and build many different types of steel structures these days, aviation is in our DNA since our very first hangars for Louis Bleriot.

“We have led the way with new technologies and practices, including our own patented methods, as the aviation industry has evolved over the years.

“Aircraft are getting larger and have increasingly complex maintenance needs, while many hangars these days incorporate doors, cranes, offices and […]

Brexit is the answer on Any Questions

BREXIT: REIDsteel Managing Director Simon Boyd appeared on Any Questions. He is pictured back left with Jonathan Dimbleby centre and Conservative party chairman Sir Patrick Sir Patrick McLoughlin back right. Front left is Labour MP Caroline Flint and front right is Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable

OUR Managing Director Simon Boyd urged politicians to present a united front for Brexit negotiations when he appeared on the BBC’s flagship Any Questions programme.

He warned that some politicians were damaging the position of the UK’s negotiators by playing party politics and that some (past and present) were deliberately trying to undermine the process with the aim of keeping us in the EU.

Mr Boyd, who is managing director of Christchurch-based REIDsteel, appeared on the Radio 4 programme in Dorchester with Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable, Labour MP Caroline Flint and Conservative Party chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin.

He sparked a lively debate when he insisted that Brexit could not come quickly enough and that the UK must be prepared to walk away without a deal.

Simon, speaking after the broadcast, said: […]

It means we will be held up us a role model to encourage businesses to think internationally and act as an ambassador to bang the drum for UK exporters.

We’ll also receive high-level support to break into new markets amongst the 52 English-speaking countries in the Commonwealth, which has a combined population of 2.2 billion people and GDP of £7.4trillion ($9.6 trillion).

Entries have opened for this year’s prestigious Dorset Business Awards after a launch event at the Italian Villa at Compton Acres in Poole.

We’re proud to be sponsoring the UK Exporter of the Year award, which is a new category added for 2017.

Our Sales Manager Mike Chappell attended the launch along other sponsors, guests and dignitaries. Mike is pictured with Ian Girling, who is Chief Executive of organisers Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).

The UK Exporter of the Year Award aims to recognise businesses which have achieved the most sustainable levels of international growth through exporting.

As a four-times winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade and a previous Dorset Business Awards winner, we felt it was important to show our support.

We’re encouraging businesses to enter to win recognition for their own excellence plus help raise the profile of international trade at a pivotal time for our country.

2017-06-30T12:58:24+00:00 June 30th, 2017|Categories: News|

We’re backing Dorset businesses with sponsorship of the county’s prestigious annual awards.

The Dorset Business Awards will be launched in early July before the honours are announced at a glittering ceremony in November.

We’re proud to sponsor one of the new categories for this year’s awards although we can’t say which one until the official launch day.

Organisers from Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) are aiming for one of the biggest and best awards so far.

There are so many exceptional companies deserving recognition for their achievements and there has never been a better time to celebrate their successes as we look to new horizons following Brexit.

We’re delighted to show our support for the Chamber and the county’s brilliant businesses through our sponsorship and involvement with the awards.

We’re looking forward to seeing some outstanding entries. As a four times winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade) and the Exporter of the Year title at the 2006 Dorset Business Awards, we know the benefits which success can bring.

It drives business enquiries, enhances brand recognition, acts as a valuable recruitment and staff retention tool, generates great publicity, makes staff […]

Brexit to the letter

2017-06-20T09:04:53+00:00 June 20th, 2017|Categories: News|

Brexit to the letterOur managing director Simon Boyd has personally written to every single MP in the UK to urge a clean break from the European Union.
As debate continues at the start of formal Brexit negotiations today, Simon has sent letters to all 650 MPs at Westminster – including the Prime Minister – urging them not to ‘snatch defeat from the jaws of victory’.

He warned that watered down Brexit plans would hit thousands of businesses – especially SMEs – and be a betrayal of the will of the people.
Mr Boyd writes in his letter: “We voted Out and that means Out please.

Out of the EU but not Out of Europe. Out of the damaging jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. Out of the single market that only works for the few.
“Out of the customs union that ties us to trading to a protectionist block.”

Simon’s letter comes after PM Theresa May vowed to keep pre-election plans to leave the single market and customs union to allow the UK to negotiate free trade partnerships around the world.

As a four-times winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International […]
